Automobiles are motor vehicles used to transport people or cargo, and usually have four wheels and are powered by an internal combustion engine, most commonly gasoline (petrol). They were first invented in the late 1800s and quickly replaced horse-drawn carriages. They were the main means of transportation throughout the 20th century in the United States and much of Europe. The automobile made it possible for people to live and work far from their homes. This increased the number of jobs available and also allowed families to grow, since they could live in one area while working elsewhere.

The modern automobile was invented in 1886 by German inventor Carl Benz, who used his patented four-stroke internal combustion engine to power his Benz Patent-Motorwagen. In 1908, American carmaker Henry Ford introduced industrial manufacturing techniques to his factory production line which brought down the cost of automobiles making them affordable for middle-class households. This is credited with bringing the automobile to the masses and changing society.
